On a Studio Mantelpiece (Self-Portrait), 1917
Adrian Allinson RA (1890-1959)

Oil on canvas

Adrian Allinson was a prominent and talented member of the great Slade generation of painters that also encompassed such various talents as C.R.W Nevinson and Stanley Spencer. Allinson also knew Sickert and other members of the Camden Town Group of painters but became one of the founding members of the avant garde London Group of painters, formed as a reaction to the perceived conservatism of the more established New English Arts Club. ‘Studio Mantelpiece’ was first exhibited at a London Group exhibition in April 1917. It provides a tantalising and exceptionally rare glimpse of Allinson himself and of an artist’s studio of the ‘Bloomsbury’ period.
Provenance: London Group Exhibition, Mansard Gallery, Heals April & November 1917
