Joseph Murray Ince    (1806-1859)

‘The Baggage Wagon (Rainy Effect)’

Oil on mahogany panel, signed and dated ‘1828’. Exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1832

Ince was a pupil of Cox at Hereford between 1822 and 1826, but spent much of his working life at Cambridge, exhibiting widely, at the RA and elsewhere. An original label records that this vivid small landscape – raised above the ordinary by its fascinating glimpse of everyday military life of the period - was produced during the early years of his stay in Cambridge.
