James Paterson PRSW RWS (1854-1932)

'The Artist's Mother'

Coloured chalks and bodycolour, signed and dated 1918

Paterson was a leading member of the Glasgow School of painting, well-known
for his stylish Barbizon-esque Scottish landscapes. He was also a very
accomplised portraitist, as shown in this tender, characterful portrait of
his mother - a Victorian matron out of her time, depicted with great panache
and lovely bravura dashes of colour amid the chalk
