‘The Crown and the Slipper’ was only the second work that Bell exhibited at the Royal Academy and this is a study for that work – an unusually large and atmospheric study in chalk that shows Bell’s affinity for the medieval, which would later find expression in the sepulchral interiors of Westminster Cathedral.
