Stokes' long and distinguished career spanned the Victorian, Edwardian and early Modern periods. He was extremely well travelled and married the Austrian painter, Marianne Preindlsburger, with whom he co-exhibited after their marriage. This subtle and well preserved depiction of a creek in the South of France is typical of his late work
