VERA WILLOUGHBY (1870-1939) Designs for A Woman (x 6) Pencil Willoughby is emerging as one of the most original and important female illustrators of the 1920s and 30s. Educated at the Slade, she developed a characteristic illustrative style that has elements of art deco, cubism and orientalism, shot through with a trademark, sinuous sexuality. 'Design For A Woman' – a putative novel by Rex Woods - was not published (I have the reader's amusing rejection note) and these superb illustrations have never seen the light of day until now. Willoughby was an important member of the Underground Group at London Transport and designed some of their most memorable posters
